Earlier in the year, we wrote a post all about our Sancho's story and our store's journey up to the present day. However, since the opening of our second womenswear store at 117 Fore Street last November, we have done so much already. From travelling to Ethiopia to source ethical pieces for our store to hosting the first ever Slow Fashion Show, some pretty exciting things have been happening at Sancho's! Here's to another year of reaching goals and making a change in the world...
October 2017: Our womenswear store at 117 Fore Street started to take shape
Two years after opening our original store at 126 Fore Street back in 2015, we realised that we didn't have enough space to offer bigger and better fashion choices to Exeter and other communities of the UK. So, we decided to open a new shop to enable us to do just that! We worked hard behind the scenes transforming our space at 117 Fore Street into a beautiful store that is at once practical and aesthetically pleasing. We also hired a few new interns who helped us paint and create the store and transform the Sancho's brand even further!
Early November 2017: Our womenswear store at 117 Fore Street opened
Finally, it was time to open our doors to the public! On 11th November 2017, we hosted our Opening Party where we offered 10% off everything in both our shops for the whole day and launched our new autumn winter items. We showcased 10 new brands, alongside a line of our own vegan shoes, woven scarves from Ethiopia, and a line of jewellery Kalkidan designed.
Late November 2018: We held a Black Friday sale to raise money for Exeter Food Bank
We host sales because we believe ethical fashion should be accessible to everyone. That's why for our Black Friday sale 2017 we offered 10% off each purchase and gave 10% to Exeter Food Bank who do incredible things to change local's lives here in Exeter. Keep your eyes peeled for this year's Black Friday sale!
February 2018: We visited Ethiopia
March 2018: We relaunched our menswear store at 126 Fore Street and celebrated our 3 year anniversary
April 2018: Fashion Revolution Week
Fashion Revolution Week was one of the most exciting weeks of the year for us at Sancho's. In honour of Fashion Revolution Week, we thought it'd only be fitting to host a week of events to celebrate ethical fashion and encourage more people to join us on our sustainable journey! We hosted a Repair and Rejuvenate Workshop, a Clothes Swap and Second Chance Sale, an Introduction to Ethical Fashion Talk, a Meet the Makers Panel Discussion and a Fashion Revolution Sales Party. We also launched our Sancho's Capsule Collection where we had an exclusive, intimate shopping evening with some of our loyal customers who were the first to purchase the collection.
May 2018: Our pipes burst thanks to a build-up of wet wipes
This was definitely one of the biggest lows for Sancho's in 2018! A blockage in the public pipes, due to the build-up of wet wipes from other residents in the street caused an increase in pressure on the street water network. This burst the pipes in the back of our shop causing the biggest leak we've had to deal with.
This event triggered an important conversation on plastic waste. It was surprising and disappointing that the blockage happened after the government pushed to reduce the number of wet wipes due to the cost to the wastewater system. #
Striving to make the most of a bad situation, we ran a 25% off sale using the code LEMONADE25. Because when life gives you lemons you've got to try to make lemonade...
Early September 2018: We hosted our first Plastic Free Pick-nic
In September we teamed up with Plastic Free Exeter to host our first Plastic Free Pick-nic! On this day we all strolled down to the Quay, picking up litter along the way, before settling down for a yummy plastic-free picnic, with items that didn't come out of plastic wrapping! It was amazing seeing so many of our customers so passionate about reducing plastic pollution.
Late September 2018: We hosted the first Slow Fashion Show
Probably the most exciting event of the year for us was, of course, The Slow Fashion Show! We worked together with In Exeter to host a night celebrating slow fashion that highlighted Autumn/Winter lines from selected independent businesses. We also showcased designers and brands from the South West and provided a space for community groups to present their projects through fashion. We also launched the South West Sustainable Design Award, celebrating the many sustainably minded designers, makers and community projects in the South West.
November 2018: We are ready to welcome Safia Minney and celebrate the first birthday of our womenswear store
And here we are! One year later. We can't believe it's already been a year since we opened our womenswear store at 117 Fore Street. To celebrate this exciting anniversary, we are hosting a number of events this week here at Sancho's.
We are firstly welcoming Safia Minney to our store who will be sharing all about "How Sustainable and Fair Fashion Happens and Why it Needs to Become the New Norm". Safia will be sharing her experience in setting up the sustainable fashion powerhouse, People Tree, and working with Po-Zu and her book, "Slave to Fashion". There are just a few tickets left so book now to avoid disappointment! To celebrate her talk we are currently offering 15% off all People Tree clothing at Sancho's with the discount code 'peopletree15'.
We are also hosting first birthday celebrations all weekend at 117 Fore Street! We promise merriment in the form of cake, a special discount throughout the weekend and a gift with every purchase, and the introduction of many new lines that we know you'll love! If you can't join us on the weekend itself, we don't want you to miss out, so look out for a special discount code that will be announced on Friday 9th November.
Thank you so much to everyone who has supported us on our ethical journey both over the past year and the last few years 😊 We hope you can join us this week to celebrate with us!
